European electricity market prices reversed their trend in the fourth week of August

In the fourth week of August, prices declined in most European markets, supported by increased wind energy production coupled with decreases in demand and average temperatures. The exception was the Iberian market, where prices remained above 90/MWh for most of the week, with lower solar energy production in Spain and Portugal, and wind energy in the case of Portugal. TTF gas futures prices remained stable, below 40/MWh.

Lower prices in the iberian electricity market, while prices rise in the rest of the european markets

In the third week of August, wind production together with the decrease in demand and average temperatures contributed to the drop in prices in the Iberian market of Spain and Portugal. In the rest of Europe's major electricity markets, most of them saw higher prices than the previous week and lower solar production. TTF gas futures prices remained below the 40/MWh of the previous week.

TTF gas futures hit highest since December 2023 in second week of August

In the second week of August, TTF gas futures prices continued their upward trend from the previous week, reaching levels above €40/MWh, which has not been seen since early December 2023. However, most of the main European electricity markets resisted the rise in gas prices and reached lower prices than the previous week, thanks to lower demand and, in some cases, higher renewable energy production. In France, solar photovoltaic energy broke the all-time record for daily production, and Germany and Italy registered the highest PV energy production for an August month.

Gas and CO2 rebounded and boosted prices in European electricity markets in the first week of August

In the first week of August, gas and CO2 prices rose, leading to price increases in most of the main European electricity markets. The Italian market registered the highest daily price of the year on July 29 and the Iberian market the second highest on August 5. The French market broke the historical record for photovoltaic production on July 29, and those of Italy, Spain and Portugal reached the highest production for an August month using this technology.

Analysis July 2024
European photovoltaic energy continued to break production records in July

In July, prices in the electricity markets of Spain, Portugal, France and Italy rose compared to June, driven by higher temperatures that boosted electricity demand. Lower wind energy production in most markets also contributed to this trend. In the markets further north on the continent, the rise in temperatures and demand was less pronounced. In these markets, prices fell in line with lower gas and CO2 prices. Monthly photovoltaic energy production was an all time high in Germany, Spain, Italy, France and Portugal.
