Lower prices in European electricity markets thanks to increased wind energy production

In the third week of September, European electricity markets prices fell compared to the previous week. The decline was due to lower demand and a significant increase in wind energy production in several markets, which offset the increase in gas and CO2 prices. On September 25 TTF gas futures reached their highest level since early April and on September 18 Brent reached its highest settlement price since November 2022.

Spain brings solar PPA to lead Europe

PPA are booming as a tool in the energy transition. PPA allow renewable energy producers to guarantee the long term sale of their production, facilitating financing. In turn, consumers ensure a supply at agreed prices, avoiding market volatility and demonstrating their commitment to the environment. Spain has brought solar PPA to lead in Europe. AleaGreen facilitates the search for counterparties to originate PPA.

September starts with lower prices of gas and European electricity markets

The fall in gas prices during the first week of September, after the rebound in August, accompanied by the increase in photovoltaic energy production, relaxed prices in most European electricity markets. However, the fall in wind and solar energy production in the Iberian Peninsula contributed to the rise in prices in the MIBEL market. It should be noted that the highest hourly prices since December were registered in the German, Belgian and Dutch markets, above €300/MWh.

The upturn in gas prices in August caused the rise in European electricity markets prices

In August 2023, prices in most European electricity markets increased, ranging between €90/MWh and €112/MWh. Higher gas prices, as well as lower solar energy production, contributed to these increases. On the other hand, Spain, Italy, France and Portugal registered all time records of photovoltaic and wind energy production for a month of August.
