Prices rise in European electricity markets due to gas and CO2 while photovoltaic energy continues to set records

In the week of May 20, prices in the main European electricity markets rose following increases in gas and CO2 prices. TTF gas and CO2 futures reached the highest values since the first half of December 2023 and January 2024, respectively. Even so, most markets registered negative hourly prices, primarily over the weekend. Solar photovoltaic energy set all time production records again in Spain, Portugal and Italy. Wind energy production declined in most markets.

Solar photovoltaic energy set a daily production record in Germany in the third week of May

On May 14, in Germany, solar photovoltaic energy registered the highest production in the history of this market, exceeding 400 GWh. Wind energy production increased in most markets during the third week of May, which, together with lower gas and CO2 prices than the previous week, contributed to the fall in prices in most major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. Most markets registered hours with negative prices.

At AleaSoft Energy Forecasting, studies, analyses and reports are carried out for hybrid systems, mainly of solar photovoltaic energy with batteries, but also of solar photovoltaic energy with wind energy, and of the three, solar photovoltaic energy, wind energy and batteries. The objective of these studies, analyses and reports is defining strategies for optimising the operation of hybrid systems to maximise their income. In addition, the estimation of future income is made taking into account the defined strategy and long term hourly market price forecasts.

At AleaSoft Energy Forecasting, the Alea Energy DataBase (AleaApp) was developed, an online platform which compiles the data from the energy markets and the macroeconomic data from the main European markets, helping and facilitating the digitalisation of the companies. In this tool it is possible to visualise and analyse the data through comparative graphs of variables, calculation of the moving average, changes in the temporality of the series, among others.
