European electricity markets register declines in the fourth week of July with higher wind energy and lower solar photovoltaic energy production

During the fourth week of July, solar photovoltaic energy production decreased in the main European electricity markets, while wind energy production increased in many of them. Electricity demand fell in several key markets, leading to a widespread decline in electricity prices. Brent oil and gas futures also dropped, and CO2 emission allowance prices showed slight fluctuations.

European electricity markets remain stable in the third week of July as photovoltaic energy breaks records in Iberia

During the third week of July, electricity prices in the main European electricity markets remained similar to those of the previous week, with slight increases in most cases. Solar photovoltaic energy production reached a historic record in Spain on July 16, while Portugal registered its highest value for a July day on July 14. Electricity demand rose in several markets, and although CO2 emission allowance prices increased at the beginning of the week, they remained at around the same level as the previous week, along with gas prices.

Photovoltaic energy records and lower demand moderate prices in European electricity markets in the second week of July

During the second week of July, electricity prices in most major European markets fell compared to the previous week, although in nearly all cases, weekly averages remained above €75/MWh. Throughout the week, France and Italy reached their highest-ever daily photovoltaic energy production, while Spain registered its highest level for a day in July. The drop in demand, due to milder temperatures, also contributed to downward pressure on prices.

The heatwave drives up prices in European electricity markets in the first week of July

In the first week of July, prices in the main European electricity markets increased compared to the previous week. On July 1, daily prices exceeded €110/MWh in most markets, and the Belgian and Dutch markets reached €517.57/MWh at 20:00. The rise in electricity demand driven by the heatwave that affected Europe contributed to the increase in prices. Additionally, Mainland Spain and Italy registered the highest daily demand so far in 2025 on July 2 and July 4, respectively.

Control centres: the brain of the electricity and gas system

Control centres are the brain of the energy system. They manage in real time the energy production and the grid balance in an increasingly complex, renewable and decentralised environment. To anticipate potential disruptions and make strategic decisions, they need accurate forecasts and advanced tools based on artificial intelligence to provide visibility, robustness and stability to the system.

The first half of 2025 leaves records for solar photovoltaic energy production and the highest prices since 2023 in several European electricity markets

In the first half of 2025, the average price in most major European electricity markets exceeded €60/MWh and was the highest since the second half of 2023 in several markets. Rising demand and rising gas and CO2 prices drove this trend. In contrast, increasing wind and solar energy production helped prices in markets further south on the continent to fall compared to the previous six-month period. Half-year solar photovoltaic energy production was the highest ever in the main European markets.

HYBRID SYSTEMS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY AND BATTERIES
At AleaSoft Energy Forecasting, studies, analyses and reports are carried out for hybrid systems, mainly of solar photovoltaic energy with batteries, but also of solar photovoltaic energy with wind energy, and of the three, solar photovoltaic energy, wind energy and batteries. The objective of these studies, analyses and reports is defining strategies for optimising the operation of hybrid systems to maximise their income. In addition, the estimation of future income is made taking into account the defined strategy and long term hourly market price forecasts.
