Less cold temperatures and more wind energy lower European electricity market prices, but they remain above €100/MWh
In the fourth week of January, prices in the main European electricity markets fell compared to those of the previous week. Despite the declines, weekly averages were above €100/MWh in most markets, and many reached the highest daily price since at least the beginning of 2024. Declining demand due to less cold temperatures, as well as higher wind energy production favored the price declines, even though gas and CO2 prices increased. CO2 futures reached the highest settlement price since late 2023.

Photovoltaic energy continues to set records, but cold weather and CO2 prices make European electricity markets more expensive in the third week of January
In the third week of January, prices rose in most major European electricity markets, driven by lower wind energy production, increased demand due to colder temperatures and higher gas and CO2 prices. On January 17, CO2 futures reached the highest settlement price since late May. Solar photovoltaic energy production increased, setting all-time records for a January day in Spain, Portugal and France. On the 15th, Brent futures registered the highest settlement price since mid-August.

Gas, wind energy and demand again marked a mixed evolution of European electricity market prices in the second week of 2025
In the second week of 2025, gas prices, wind energy and demand again marked a mixed evolution in the main European electricity markets. Declining gas prices and increased wind energy production drove prices down in some markets, while in others, rising demand favored the increase in prices. In the British N2EX market, on January 10 the price, €272.43/MWh, was the highest since mid-December 2022. France reached the highest values in the history of photovoltaic and wind energy production for a January day.

Rising gas prices and wind energy mark a mixed start to the year in European electricity markets
In the first week of 2025, TTF gas futures rose, reaching the highest settlement price since October 2023, above €50/MWh. This, coupled with rising CO2 prices and electricity demand, as well as declining photovoltaic energy production, supported higher prices in some of the main European electricity markets. In contrast, the increase in wind energy production led to lower prices in other markets. Portugal and France registered the second highest wind energy production in their history.

In 2024 European electricity markets reached their lowest prices since 2021 thanks to renewable energy and falling gas prices
In 2024, the main European electricity markets reached the lowest yearly prices since 2021, in most cases below €80/MWh. Gas prices were also the lowest since 2021, which contributed to the declines in electricity market prices, along with lower CO2 prices. Solar photovoltaic energy reached historical production records in all markets and wind energy in Portugal. At the same time, electricity demand recovered in most markets.
