European electricity market prices continue to recover, while photovoltaic energy reaches all time highs in the Iberian Peninsula
In the fourth week of April, prices continued to recover in the main European electricity markets. Even so, most markets registered negative prices for a few hours, especially on Sunday, April 28. In the MIBEL market, weekly prices were again the lowest for the twelfth consecutive week. Gas and CO2 price rises drive European electricity markets, but the Iberian market resists
In the third week of April, prices rose in most major European electricity markets. The exception was the Iberian market, which had the lowest prices for the eleventh consecutive week. Gas and CO2 futures rose to prices not seen since the first half of January. The increase in demand also favored price rises in the electricity markets. In the Iberian Peninsula, renewable energy production increased, helping to drive prices down. On April 19, Spain reached the highest photovoltaic energy production for an April month.

April starts with new photovoltaic energy records and price declines in European energy markets
In the first week of April, prices fell in the main European electricity markets, with most of them below €50/MWh. Photovoltaic energy reached an all time production record in Portugal and the second highest value ever in Italy. In France, wind energy registered the second and third highest production for an April month. In addition to increases in solar energy in most markets and wind energy in some of them, lower demand and lower gas and CO2 prices contributed to the fall in electricity market prices.

Prices and futures of European energy markets plummet in the first quarter of 2024
In the first quarter of 2024, prices in the main European electricity markets fell to their lowest levels since at least the second quarter of 2021 in most markets. Declines in gas and CO2 prices marked this evolution. The general increase in solar energy production combined with the increase in wind energy production in most markets also contributed to the price declines. Photovoltaic energy production was the highest ever registered in a first quarter in most markets, a record that wind energy production also reached in Italy.

The Spanish electricity market registers negative prices for the first time and, together with Portugal, continues to have the lowest prices in Europe
In the last week of March, the Iberian MIBEL market registered the lowest prices in Europe for the eighth consecutive week and the Spanish market registered negative prices for the first time in its history on April 1. In most major European electricity markets, prices fell compared to the previous week. In several markets this was the week with the lowest average, or the second lowest average, in 2024 so far. Declining demand and increased renewable energy production favored these declines. Portugal and France registered wind energy production records for a March month on the 27th and 28th, respectively.
