Stability in European energy markets in the fourth week of July

In the fourth week of July, prices in the main European electricity markets, as well as gas and CO2 futures prices, remained in the same range as in the previous week. Most electricity markets registered negative prices on Sunday, July 28. On that day, Italy registered the highest photovoltaic energy production for a July month. Wind energy production was higher than the previous week in most markets, while electricity demand decreased in almost all markets.

European market prices continue their upward trend in summer while photovoltaic energy registered records in Portugal and France

In the third week of July, prices in most major European electricity markets continued to rise compared to the previous week. However, the drop in prices over the weekend meant that weekly price increases did not exceed 10%. Portugal broke the historical record for photovoltaic energy production again on July 16, while on July 18, France registered the highest production using this technology for a July month. On the same day, Italy registered the highest electricity demand so far in 2024.

Summer heat and a drop in wind energy boosted European electricity market prices in the second week of July

In the second week of July, prices in the main European electricity markets rose compared to the previous week. These increases were favored by the drop in wind energy production and the increase in temperatures, which caused demand to rise in most markets. Almost all markets registered negative prices in some hours. Solar energy production increased in all markets and photovoltaic energy production registered historical records in Spain and Portugal, and records for a July month in France and Germany.

Second half of the year begins with price falls in European electricity markets supported by wind energy and gas prices

In the first week of July, prices in most major European electricity markets fell compared to the previous week. Almost all markets registered hours with negative prices in the latter part of the week. Rising wind energy production, as well as lower gas prices and demand in some markets, contributed to the decline in prices. Photovoltaic energy broke records in Spain on the 3rd, and Portugal, France and Italy reached their highest daily production for a July month during the week.

Analysis first half of 2024
European electricity market prices fell in the first half of the year while renewable technologies registered all time records

In the first half of 2024, prices fell compared to the previous six months in most major European electricity markets. On a year on year basis, the decline was widespread. The Spanish market registered the lowest price in this period. In almost all markets the average price for the first six months of 2024 was the lowest since the first or second half of 2021. Half yearly photovoltaic energy production was the highest ever in all markets, a milestone also reached by wind energy in some cases. Electricity demand increased year on year in most markets, while gas and CO2 prices declined.

Prices fall in most European electricity markets while the German market breaks historical price and photovoltaic energy records

In the last week of June, prices in most major European electricity markets fell compared to the previous week. The exceptions were the Iberian and German markets. In the latter, the weekly average increased due to the price of €2325.83/MWh reached in one hour on June 26, when the single European market decoupled. This is the highest price ever registered in the history of the German market. Photovoltaic energy reached an all time production record in Germany on the 25th, and a day earlier, France registered the highest value for a June month.
