Rising prices in European electricity markets due to increasing temperatures and decreasing renewable energy production
In the third week of June, prices in most major European electricity markets increased compared to the previous week. The main causes of this rise were the increase in average temperatures, which favored the increase in demand in most markets, as well as the generalized decrease in wind energy production and the decrease in solar energy production in most markets. Solar energy production only increased in Spain, where photovoltaic energy registered an all time production record on June 21.

European electricity markets react to increased wind energy production with price declines
In the second week of June, prices in most major European electricity markets fell compared to the previous week. Over the weekend, almost all markets reached negative hourly prices. The Iberian market registered prices of -€2.00/MWh, which is the lowest value in the history of this market. France reached the lowest price since the end of May 2020 on Saturday. The increase in wind energy production in almost all markets and in solar energy production in the Iberian Peninsula favored these falls. Portugal reached the historical record of photovoltaic energy production and in France, both wind and solar energy registered the highest production for a June month.

The decline in wind energy pushed European market prices higher at the beginning of June, although there were negative prices in some hours
In the first week of June, prices in most European electricity markets increased compared to the previous week. Germany registered the highest price since the end of November 2023, €235.52/MWh, on June 4 from 20:00 to 21:00. The increases were largely driven by the general decline in wind energy production. Despite the increases, most markets registered negative prices for some hours. Photovoltaic energy registered daily production records for a June month in Germany, Italy and Portugal, and the third highest value in history in Spain. On June 3, TTF gas futures reached their highest settlement price since the first half of December. However, the weekly gas average was lower, as was CO2.

Analysis May 2024
European electricity market prices recovered in May, while photovoltaic energy registered production records
In May, prices in most major European electricity markets were higher than in April, slowing the falls of recent months. The Iberian market abandoned the position it had held for three consecutive months as the market with the lowest prices, a position that was taken over by the French market. Photovoltaic energy registered records in all markets, historical records in some cases or records for the month of May in others, while wind energy production fell in most of them. Gas and CO2 prices increased compared to April.

Lower prices in European electricity markets in the last week of May and new PV record in Portugal
In the last week of May, prices in most European electricity markets fell compared to the previous week. Most markets registered negative prices at the end of the week. The increase in renewable energy production and the decrease in demand in some markets favored the decreases. On May 27, Portugal broke the all time record for photovoltaic energy production with 21 GWh generated using this technology. Wind energy production increased in most markets.
