European wind energy continued to curb the effect of the gas price rise on electricity markets in the third week of November
In the third week of November, average prices in most major European electricity markets declined compared to the previous week. On Sunday, November 24, several markets registered the lowest daily price since at least the last three months. High wind energy production, which during the week reached historical or November records in the main European markets, favored price declines and slowed the effect of the price rise of gas, whose futures registered the highest price for more than a year.

Optimism about the future of batteries, hybridisation and energy storage
Energy storage and hybridisation are transforming the energy landscape, establishing themselves as essential pillars to integrate renewable energies, improve the stability of the electricity system and advance the energy transition. Significant challenges lie ahead for the sector, such as permitting, implementation of a capacity market, development of clear and stable regulation to attract investment and social acceptance. Nevertheless, there is optimism in the sector and the next five years are shaping up to be the five-year period of batteries and hybridisation.

Wind energy prevents rising gas prices from driving up European electricity market prices in the second week of November
In the second week of November, average prices in most major European electricity markets exceeded €100/MWh, although they were lower than the previous week. This decrease occurred thanks to the increase in wind energy production and despite gas prices rising and registering the highest values of 2024. Even so, the Iberian and French markets registered the highest daily price of this year. Photovoltaic energy in Portugal surpassed the production record for a day in November. Demand increased in most markets, CO2 futures rose and Brent futures fell.

In some markets, hourly prices were the highest since 2022, and in others, the highest of this year. The increase in demand, as well as the decrease in wind energy production and photovoltaic energy production in some markets, favored the increases. In addition, gas prices continued to be among the highest of this year, above €40/MWh.

October gas prices, at their highest since December, boosted prices in most European electricity markets
In October, prices in most major European electricity markets rose compared to September, driven by gas prices, which reached their highest levels since December 2023. Some markets registered their highest monthly prices since at least February. In addition, the decrease in solar energy production, and the decline in wind energy production in some markets, together with mostly higher demand, contributed to the increase in market prices. Despite the autumn decline in photovoltaic energy production, Germany, Spain and Portugal reached production records with this technology for October, reflecting the growth in installed capacity associated with increasing investment in renewable energies.
