European electricity market prices rose in February driven by gas and falling wind energy production

Prices in the main European electricity markets rose in February 2025, in many cases reaching their highest level since March 2023. This rebound was driven by rising gas prices, which also marked their highest monthly average since that date. In addition, wind energy production fell, in some markets registering its lowest level for February in several years. In contrast, solar photovoltaic energy generation reached its historical maximum for February in the main European markets.

Falling gas and CO2 prices limit price rises in European electricity markets in the last week of February

In the last week of February, weekly prices in most major European electricity markets were above €100/MWh. In almost all of them, the weekly average was higher than the previous week, although the increases did not exceed 12%. Spain, Portugal and France registered the highest photovoltaic energy production for a February day and wind energy production increased in most markets. Electricity demand decreased in most markets. Gas, CO2 and Brent futures reached the lowest settlement price since December.

Falling gas and CO2 prices ease pressure on European electricity markets in the third week of February

In the third week of February, prices fell in the main European electricity markets, with most of them reaching weekly averages below €110/MWh. Several factors contributed to these declines. On the one hand, the fall in gas and CO2 prices, as well as the decline in demand. On the other hand, the increase in renewable energy production. Photovoltaic energy increased, registering records for a February day in Germany, Italy and Portugal. In addition, wind energy production increased in several markets.

European electricity markets continued to rise in the second week of February, with the exception of the Iberian market thanks to wind energy

In the second week of February, prices in most major European electricity markets rose and weekly averages exceeded €140/MWh. However, in the Iberian market, the increase in wind energy production and the decrease in electricity demand favored lower prices. The French market broke the photovoltaic energy production record for a February day again. On Monday, February 10, TTF gas futures reached the highest value since early February 2023, above €58/MWh.

Rising gas and less wind push European electricity market prices above €120/MWh in the first week of February

In the first week of February, TTF gas futures prices continued to rise and reached the highest settlement price in the last two years at the end of the week. In this context, coupled with lower wind energy production and higher demand, prices in the main European electricity markets rose, with most weekly averages exceeding €120/MWh. Solar photovoltaic energy reached production records for a February day in Spain, Portugal and France.

In January, European electricity market prices reached maximums since March 2023 driven by gas, CO2 and demand

In January 2025, prices in most major European electricity markets rose, with some reaching their highest monthly average since March 2023. This increase follows the trend of gas prices, whose futures marked their highest monthly value since then, and CO2 prices, with their highest level since December 2023. The increase in electricity demand also drove this upward trend. Photovoltaic energy registered its highest production for any January in all major European markets, a record also reached by wind energy in Spain, France and Portugal.

Gas and CO2 reach the highest prices since the last quarter of 2023 on the last day of January

In the last week of January, weekly average prices in the main European electricity markets were lower than the previous week. Lower demand and increased solar photovoltaic and wind energy production supported this evolution. However, during the week prices registered an upward trend that led most of them to reach the highest prices of the week during the weekend, in some cases on Sunday. This trend followed that registered by gas and CO2 futures, which at the end of the week reached the highest prices since the last quarter of 2023.
