Wind energy records for a February month in Portugal and France

In the week of February 19, European electricity market prices fell compared to the previous week, with the MIBEL market showing the lowest prices. The increase in wind energy production and the decrease in gas and CO2 prices favored this behavior. Portugal and France registered the highest wind energy production for a February month, and Spain and Portugal broke again the record for the highest photovoltaic energy production for a February month, reached the previous week.

Frenetic development and high investor appetite for battery projects in Spain

Activity in the battery market in Spain is frenetic and investor appetite is high. Although current regulation is considered sufficient for battery projects, there are challenges in obtaining local and regional permits due to the lack of experience in energy storage projects. The expected capacity market is the missing piece of the revenue stack for financial institutions to be willing to provide non-recourse financing for battery projects.

Photovoltaic energy registers the highest daily production in history for a February month in Spain, Portugal and Italy

In the third week of February, European electricity market prices remained stable, most of them with averages below €70/MWh. The MIBEL market registered the lowest averages for the second week in a row. Photovoltaic energy registered the highest daily production in history for a February month in Spain, Portugal and Italy. Gas and CO2 futures continued to fall and registered settlement prices not reached since June 2023 and October 2021, respectively.

European wind energy production protagonist in the second week of February with a historic record in Germany

In the week of February 5, European electricity market prices remained at levels similar to those they have registered since the second half of January. The MIBEL market registered the lowest weekly averages. Wind energy was the protagonist of the week in most markets and registered an all time high in Germany on the 6th. Gas and CO2 futures continued to fall and registered the lowest prices since July 2023 and October 2021, respectively.

Price stability in European electricity markets in the fifth week of 2024

In the week of January 29, average prices in most major European electricity markets were similar to the previous week. Solar energy production continued to increase in most markets as the days got longer, while wind energy production was generally lower than the previous week. Demand decreased in almost all markets. CO2 futures continued to decline and gas futures halted the downward trend of recent months.

Solar photovoltaic and wind energy reach record highs for a January month in 2024

In January 2024, prices in European electricity markets maintained the stability of recent months and registered slightly higher averages than in December 2023. Solar photovoltaic energy production reached record levels for a January month in all markets and wind energy production in Germany and Italy. Electricity demand increased in general. Average gas and CO2 prices fell for the third and sixth consecutive month, respectively.
