Renewables set records in Europe in May while electricity market prices rise due to gas prices

In May 2026, monthly average prices increased in most of the main European electricity markets. Higher gas and CO2 prices, together with the drop in wind energy production in several markets, supported this trend. Germany reached an all-time record for solar photovoltaic energy production, while Spain, France, Italy and Portugal recorded solar production highs for a May month and Italy a wind energy production record for that month. Brent futures registered their highest monthly average since August 2022.

Historic photovoltaic energy production records across Europe in the last week of May and falling market prices

In the fourth week of May, the weekly average prices of most of the main European electricity markets fell compared to the previous week and were, for the most part, below €95/MWh. The increase in solar photovoltaic energy production, together with the drop in gas prices, supported this trend, although the fall in wind energy production and demand pushed prices up in France, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula. The main European markets recorded all-time highs for solar photovoltaic energy production, while CO2 futures reached their highest settlement price since February 10.
