2027, a year of volatility: reserves, gas and LNG will set electricity prices in Europe
The global energy system may have enough energy in 2027 and, at the same time, go through episodes of high prices. With lower inventories, strategic reserves drawn down during the crisis and an uncertain geopolitical outlook, the margin to react to a new unexpected event has narrowed. Gas and CO2 drove European electricity market prices to multi-year highs in the third quarter of 2026
In the third quarter of 2026, prices rose in the main European electricity markets compared to the previous quarter and to the same period of 2025. European electricity market prices rose in the week of September 28, with Spain and Portugal reaching their highest levels since 2022
