New battery contracts and hybrid PPAs: valuation, accounting and financing challenges
Tolling agreements, revenue share contracts and hybrid PPAs make it easier to finance batteries and manage market risk, but they complicate their valuation and accounting treatment. This was the analysis of the Deloitte speakers at the latest AleaSoft webinar, who pointed to reliable long-term price forecasts as the basis for valuing these contracts and justifying the assumptions to auditors.

Today’s spread is not the 2035 spread: cannibalisation will decide which batteries are bankable
The monthly average of the one-hour intraday spread in Spain reached €215.37/MWh in September, compared with €195.29/MWh in August. These price differences strengthen the case for battery storage, but they raise a financing question: how revenues will evolve as installed capacity grows. The bankability of BESS projects will depend on sufficient revenues under prudent long-term scenarios.

TTF gas prices at their highest levels since 2022 and lower wind energy production drive up European electricity market prices in the third week of October
In the week of October 12, weekly prices rose across major European electricity markets as lower wind energy production, higher demand and high gas prices drove increases. Italy registered its highest daily price in several years. On Monday, October 19, Spain and Portugal registered their highest daily prices since April 2022. Spain also set a new record for solar photovoltaic energy production for an October day. TTF gas futures reached their highest settlement price since December 2022 as low European gas storage levels and tensions in the Middle East pushed prices higher. These tensions also drove up Brent oil prices.

Batteries open a new route to financing solar PV
The fall in the prices captured by solar PV has made it harder to finance new projects without storage. Hybridisation with batteries can change this situation by providing flexibility and new sources of revenue, especially when part of that revenue is contracted over the long term and offers the visibility that financial institutions look for.

The future will be renewable, but not low-priced: data centers change the equation
Captured prices for solar PV have fallen because renewable generation has grown faster than demand. Data centers, electrification and storage are beginning to change that relationship. Integrating them requires adequate grids, regulation and planning, but it opens a stage in which new demand will give value to renewable energy and storage, although the early election adds uncertainty over the timing.
