Renewable hydrogen enters the industrial phase, building is only the first step
Over the past few years, the development of renewable hydrogen in Europe has been measured mainly through targets, investment announcements and projects at the planning stage. Signs are now starting to appear that the green hydrogen sector is entering a new phase, the construction of large facilities linked to specific industrial consumers.
The future of electricity demand in Spain and Europe
Discover how electrification, data centres, renewable hydrogen and other new sources of consumption could transform electricity demand in Spain and Europe in the coming years.
More wind energy and lower demand drive down European electricity market prices in the fourth week of July
In the fourth week of July, weekly prices fell in most European electricity markets, although most markets still averaged more than €105/MWh. Higher wind energy production and lower demand supported this trend. Italy and Great Britain bucked the trend. Italy’s greater exposure to gas prices allowed the rise in TTF prices to push electricity prices higher. The conflict in the Middle East drove up Brent oil and TTF gas futures, while Italy set a new daily wind energy production record for July.
Electricity retailers and their new role as flexibility and risk managers
Growing renewable penetration, zero and negative prices, demand electrification and the development of energy storage are transforming the business of electricity retailers. Buying energy and passing it on to the consumer is no longer enough. Retailers will have to anticipate the market, manage risk and combine hedges, PPA and batteries to protect margins and offer competitive products.
Heat, Hormuz and high electricity prices: summer reminds the market of the value of hedging
High temperatures, geopolitical risk in the Strait of Hormuz, low stored gas levels and heat-related power plant outages are shaping a demanding summer for the European electricity markets. In this context, high prices and market volatility again bring to the forefront the need for well-designed risk hedging strategies backed by reliable electricity market price forecasting.
