The Brazilian electricity market is managed by the Chamber of Commercialization of Electric Energy (CCEE), established in 2004 as part of the new electricity sector model. Brazil has one of the largest and most complex electricity markets in the world, characterised by its high proportion of renewable energy sources, especially hydroelectric, and by a commercialization scheme that combines regulated and free contracts.
The operation of the electricity system is the responsibility of the National Electric System Operator (ONS), while the National Agency of Electric Energy (ANEEL) regulates and supervises the sector’s operations.
