Scientifically-backed forecasts for a sustainable energy transition

The Greek electricity market is operated by HENEX (Hellenic Energy Exchange), which started operating in 2018 as part of the electricity sector reform and transition to a liberalised electricity market fully integrated with the rest of Europe. HENEX manages the daily, intraday and forward electricity markets, and is part of the Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) since November 2020 and the Continuous Intraday Coupling (SIDC) since late 2022.

Greece’s generation mix has undergone rapid evolution, with a progressive decline in lignite and strong growth in solar energy and wind energy, in line with the country’s decarbonisation objectives.

In the coming years, Greece’s electricity system will move towards a more sustainable and competitive model:

Greece has committed to gradually phasing out lignite in electricity generation and achieving 80% participation of renewables in generation by 2030, according to its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP).
Large-scale solar projects, wind projects, both onshore and offshore, and energy storage infrastructure are being developed to support system flexibility.
The system operator, ADMIE, is driving significant investments in internal interconnections between islands and with neighbouring countries, such as Italy and Bulgaria, strengthening regional integration.
HENEX has also launched a Guarantees of Origin (GO) market and is preparing the development of new markets, such as capacity and flexibility markets.
