California’s electricity market is operated by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), responsible for operating the electricity system and administering wholesale electricity markets across most of the state, as well as parts of Nevada. CAISO is a leader in renewable energy integration and distributed resource management, and its wholesale market began operating in 1998.
California’s generation mix is dominated by renewable sources, especially solar and wind, in addition to hydroelectric, making CAISO one of the electricity systems with the highest renewable penetration in the world.
