The Texas electricity market is operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which is responsible for the operation of the electricity system and the administration of wholesale electricity markets in most of the state. ERCOT manages an electricity system isolated from the rest of the U.S. in terms of interconnection, which gives it a particular regulatory framework and significant operational autonomy. Its competitive electricity market began operating in 2002.
