The New England electricity market is operated by ISO New England (ISO-NE), which manages the operation of the regional electricity system and administers the wholesale electricity, capacity, and ancillary services markets in six states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The market began operating in 1999 and is one of the most advanced in the country in terms of regulation, planning, and energy transition.
The generation mix in the region has changed significantly in recent decades, with a sharp reduction in coal and fuel oil, and a growth in generation from natural gas and renewable sources, especially distributed solar and developing offshore wind.
