The **electricity market in the central United States** is operated by the **Midcontinent Independent System Operator** (MISO), one of the country’s main Regional Transmission Organisations (RTOs). MISO manages the operation of the electricity system and administers wholesale markets for energy, capacity, and ancillary services across a wide region covering 15 states and the Canadian province of Manitoba.

The generation mix in MISO has traditionally been dominated by **coal** and **natural gas**, although in recent years there has been significant growth in **wind** energy and, more recently, **solar photovoltaic**.

In the coming years, the electricity system managed by MISO will face significant transformations:

  • A massive retirement of traditional thermal generation is expected, along with an accelerated integration of **renewable energies** and **storage**, driven by state targets, federal policies, and corporate investments.
  • MISO is developing an ambitious grid expansion plan (LRTP: Long Range Transmission Planning) to enable the efficient integration of new large-scale renewable capacity.
  • Coordination between MISO and other operators like SPP and PJM will be key to managing regional flows and maintaining system reliability in the face of a more variable mix.
  • Market design is evolving to facilitate the participation of distributed energy resources, **flexible demand**, and new system participants.
