Lithuania’s electricity market is part of the Nordic and Baltic regional market operated by Nord Pool, participating in the fully coupled day-ahead and intraday markets through the Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) and the Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC). The Lithuanian electricity system operator is Litgrid, responsible for managing the transmission network and ensuring electricity supply security.

In recent years, Lithuania has transitioned from being a heavily importing country to promoting its energy self-sufficiency through renewable energy, storage, and new international interconnections.

In the coming years, the Lithuanian electricity system will be characterised by a profound strategic transformation:

  • The country has committed to generating 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, with a focus on developing onshore and offshore wind projects, as well as solar.
  • Large infrastructures are being built, such as offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea, and investment in batteries and smart demand management is being encouraged.
  • In February 2025, Lithuania, together with Latvia and Estonia, completed the desynchronisation from the Russian electricity grid and the synchronisation with the continental European grid (ENTSO-E), decisively reinforcing its energy security.
  • Litgrid leads digitalization, resilience, and interconnection expansion projects with Sweden (NordBalt), Poland (LitPol Link), and other countries in the region.
