The German electricity market EPEX SPOT began operating in 2000 following the liberalisation of the electricity sector in Germany and the creation of a competitive wholesale market. Germany has been one of the pioneering countries in the energy transition, known as Energiewende, with a strong push for the development of renewable energies, especially solar photovoltaic and wind.

In the coming years, the German electricity system will continue its profound transformation:

  • The country aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2045, with an almost total share of renewable energies in its electricity mix.
  • According to the federal Government's plans, it is expected to reach 215 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity and 115 GW of onshore wind by 2030.
  • Germany completed the progressive shutdown of its nuclear power plants in 2023 and also plans to phase out the use of coal by 2038 or earlier.
  • The development of energy storage, green hydrogen and the electrification of sectors such as transport and industry will be promoted.
  • Germany has a high level of interconnection with neighbouring markets, which reinforces its central role in the European electricity market.
