The Panamanian electricity market operates under the model established by Law 6 of 1997, which liberalized and reorganized the electricity sector. The National Dispatch Center (CND) is responsible for coordinating the operation of the National Interconnected System (SIN) and the economic dispatch of generation units. The National Authority of Public Services (ASEP) regulates the market and supervises its operation.
Panama has traditionally relied on a generation matrix dominated by hydroelectric power, complemented by thermal plants. In recent years, the country has actively promoted the diversification of its mix with non-conventional renewable sources such as solar photovoltaic and wind power.
