The **electricity market in the central United States** is operated by the **Midcontinent Independent System Operator** (MISO), one of the country’s main Regional Transmission Organisations (RTOs). MISO manages the operation of the electricity system and administers wholesale markets for energy, capacity, and ancillary services across a wide region covering 15 states and the Canadian province of Manitoba.
The generation mix in MISO has traditionally been dominated by **coal** and **natural gas**, although in recent years there has been significant growth in **wind** energy and, more recently, **solar photovoltaic**.
