The Croatian electricity market is operated by CROPEX (Croatian Power Exchange), the national electricity exchange, which began operations in 2016. CROPEX manages the daily and intraday markets and is part of the Single Daily Coupling Mechanism (SDAC) since 2018 and Continuous Intraday Coupling (SIDC) since 2021, allowing its full integration with the European electricity market.

The Croatian generation mix includes a significant share of hydropower, complemented by thermal power plants and sustained growth of renewable sources such as solar and wind.

In the coming years, Croatia’s electricity system will advance significantly within the framework of the energy transition:

According to its National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), Croatia aims to reach 36.6% of renewables in gross final consumption by 2030, with particular emphasis on the expansion of solar energy.
The country is promoting new renewable capacity auctions and facilitating the development of hybrid projects and energy storage systems.
The system operating company, HOPS, is investing in the modernization and expansion of the network to improve the integration of renewables and strengthen regional interconnections.
CROPEX is developing advanced market products, such as guarantees of origin (GoO), flexibility markets and mechanisms for demand response.
