The UK electricity market has been structured as a liberalised and competitive market since the 1990s.

The reference day-ahead wholesale market is organised through the N2EX platform, operated by Nord Pool, whilst EPEX SPOT also operates its own British day-ahead and intraday market. The electricity system is managed by NESO (National Energy System Operator), the public system operator created in October 2024, responsible for real-time grid balance and stability.
The British generation mix has changed radically in recent years: coal has been completely phased out — in September 2024 the UK became the first G7 country to do so — gas dependence has been reduced and renewable energy participation has notably increased, particularly onshore and offshore wind, as well as solar.

In the coming years, the UK electricity system will continue to evolve to achieve its ambitious decarbonisation targets:

At AleaSoft we have been providing services to European electricity markets for 27 years, including the UK and N2EX. We provide price forecasts, demand, renewable production and other key indicators, tailored to the needs of generators, retailers, traders, investors and system operators.
