The Australian NEM electricity market (National Electricity Market) commenced operations in 1998 and encompasses five regions: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. Managed by AEMO (Australian Energy Market Operator), the NEM is one of the world’s largest wholesale electricity markets, both by its geographical extent and transaction volume.

  • AEMO's Integrated System Plan (ISP) forecasts that by 2050, more than 80% of generation will come from renewable energy, with strong presence of energy storage and demand management.
  • Coal-fired power plants are progressively being retired, which requires coordinated planning to ensure supply security.
  • Australia is committed to large-scale projects for battery storage and hydroelectric storage to provide system stability and facilitate the integration of intermittent renewable energy.
  • The development of interconnections and green hydrogen hubs positions the country as a future exporter of renewable energy in the form of clean molecules.
