The electricity markets of Central Europe—Poland (TGE), Czechia (OTE), Slovakia (OKTE) and Hungary (HUPX)—are fully integrated into the European electricity market through the Single Day-Ahead Coupling Mechanism (SDAC) and the Continuous Intraday Coupling (SIDC). Since June 2022, the region has been part of the flow-based coupling of the Core region, which optimises the use of interconnections between Central and Western European countries.

The transmission system operators in the region are PSE (Poland), ČEPS (Czechia), SEPS (Slovakia) and MAVIR (Hungary).

The region combines highly diverse generation mixes: the still-significant role of coal in Poland, the strong nuclear presence in Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary, and accelerated growth in solar photovoltaic and wind power across all countries.

In the coming years, Central Europe’s electricity systems will face structural transformation:

  • Poland is progressing with the phased reduction of coal through strong solar deployment, the development of offshore wind in the Baltic Sea and a nuclear programme whose first power plant is scheduled to commence commercial operation in 2036.
  • Czechia is preparing the construction of two new blocks at Dukovany, scheduled from 2029, and the gradual phase-out of coal, with solar and biomass as the primary renewables.
  • Slovakia, following the commissioning of Mochovce 3 in 2023, began in June 2026 the commissioning of Mochovce 4, strengthening a low-emissions electricity mix based primarily on nuclear energy and hydroelectric power.
  • Hungary will expand Paks nuclear power plant with two new reactors (Paks II) whilst experiencing rapid growth in solar photovoltaic generation.
  • The region is strengthening its interconnections and flexibility mechanisms—energy storage and demand management—to integrate growing renewable generation and maintain supply security.
