The French electricity market EPEX SPOT began operating in 2001 as part of the liberalization process of the electricity sector in Europe. France has an electricity system historically characterised by its high dependence on nuclear energy, which has represented the majority of the country’s generation for decades. However, in recent years, renewable energies such as wind and solar photovoltaic have been gaining ground in the generation mix.

In the coming years, the French electricity system will face important challenges and transformations:

France will continue to focus on nuclear energy as the axis of its strategy to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050, with a goal of at least 63 GW of installed capacity on that horizon.
According to the French National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), 48.1 GW of wind and 54 GW of solar PV capacity are expected to be reached by 2030.
The French market is increasingly interconnected with its neighboring countries, which reinforces the integration of the European electricity market.
