The Southwest United States electricity market is operated by the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), one of the country’s main Regional Transmission Organisations (RTOs). SPP manages the operation of the electricity system and administers wholesale markets for energy, ancillary services, and capacity in a region covering 14 states in the central and southern U.S. Its integrated wholesale market began operating in 2014.
The area covered by SPP has a diversified generation mix, where wind energy has gained increasing importance in the last decade, making SPP one of the regions with the highest wind penetration in the world.
