The Spanish electricity market began operating in 1998 following the liberalisation of the electricity sector. Over the course of these years, the Spanish generation mix has evolved from being dominated by coal to an increasingly important role for renewable energies, especially solar photovoltaic and wind energy.

In the coming years, the Spanish electricity system will continue to undergo a major transformation:

According to the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) 2023-2030, the target is to reach 76 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity and 62 GW of wind capacity by 2030.
There is a timetable for the closure of the country’s seven nuclear reactors between 2027 and 2035.
The energy storage target according to the NECP 2023-2030, including batteries, pumped storage and solar thermal energy, is 22 GW by 2030.
According to the NECP 2023-2030, the installed capacity of electrolysers at the end of this decade is expected to be 11 GW.
